St GEORGE'S DAY

I wonder why the English shy away from celebrating old St George? It could be because he was a Roman soldier born in Turkey - but no one would know that. Or it could be that Nationalism is long dead in England? (Too much nationalism is certainly a bad thing - but a little wouldn't hurt?)

St Patrick's Day is widely celebrated by many English revellers who have little knowledge of St Patrick's work and writings on the denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians, and St George wasn't a million miles off St Patrick's cause - fighting against the Romans and their torture of Christians.

I'll be celebrating on APRIL 23rd with a nice hot cup of tea (who'd have it any other way?), watching the London Marathon, while I form an imaginary, yet orderly, queue of one and congratulate myself on having such a fine view of the race.

Ja Ja dit is a snaakse plek, jong.
